The Next Generation
in Word Study
The Wordsmith Programs are aligned to the CR Success Learning Reading Program. The Wordsmith Programs teach word study, spelling concepts, and writing skills in an interactive, highly engaging, memorable, and authentic manner. Wordsmith deepens students’ understanding of the English Language as it moves from spelling simple one-syllable words with a 1:1 letter-sound correspondence in Level One to spelling multisyllabic words with Greek or Latin roots in Levels 4 and 5.
Wordsmith Level 1
30-inquiry-based lessons develop the student’s ability to spell and apply through writing the basic alphabetic code using all six- syllable types. Most common sight words for writing are included in each unit.
Wordsmith Level 2
30 inquiry-based lessons develop the student’s knowledge of the entire phonetic code, while still emphasizing 1:1 sound-symbol associations. Writing activities and study of sight words are embedded for deep learning.
Wordsmith Level 3
27 inquiry-based lessons, featuring a meta-cognitive design of instruction, completes the study of the English code begun in Levels 1 and 2. Spelling with variant vowel patterns with an emphasis on multisyllabic words enhance students’ ability to write confidently.
Wordsmith Level 4
20 lessons help students review the phonetic code while learning Latin and Greek roots, prefixes and suffixes. The meaning of words, based on these morphemes, expands the student’s word knowledge. Students apply their understanding while responding to engaging writing prompts.
Wordsmith Level 5
23 lessons continue the study of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Application of featured words and a deep study of spelling patterns advance students’ vocabulary and written language.
Phonological skills, code knowledge, syllabication skills, spelling conventions, and morphological awareness are taught, as well as sight words and homophones. Wordsmith emphasizes spelling application by providing many writing activities.
